Devlog #3 - A simple Mod makes big changes
This week in class we finally got to utilize our IDEAPAK and play games!
Using what we learned in the readings, we demonstrated our ability to understand the player experience, as well as use the 10 tools of game design. We also brought back the 6 elements of every game, as they are incredibly applicable to any situation, to find elements to change in games.
In class we played a boat and river game, in which the goal was to move your boats to the end of the constantly changing map and have the most points at the end. Our group ended up changing a rule involving landing on six, in which the original rules stipulated you could move your own piece upwards to another, or move an opposing piece back to another of their own pieces. The reason we changed this rule, is that in the late game when multiple players have a single boat, landing on a six just forfeits your turn. We believe that having a turn that effectively is null, is a bad player experience, thus we changed the 6 rule entirely; The 6 rule was modified to either allow the player to move up 6 spaces or move an opponent back 6 places. This rule changes massively sped up the game, as well as added dramatic tension when the players were waiting to see what a player would decide to do with their 6.
Super fun week of class and looking forward to next week. Tune in then!
